Biography

K. Kuswadji was born 12 December 1914 in Yogyakarta and he died in 1986. 

Kuswadji was a pioneer in the modernised art (1963) of Batik painting. In 1957, he was the first painter to use batik a a medium for painting! Click on the first Batik design above for more information on Batik.
In 1965 he had his first exhibition at Sana Budaya Museum Yogyakarta.
In 1969 he was appointed as advisor and builder of the Batik Research Institution Centre.
In 1972 his paintings were exhibited by the Indonesian cultural Attaché in Itay.
In 1973 he had another exhibition, now in the Seni Sana Art Gallery Yogyakarta.
The same year he had an exhibition in the Netherlands.
In 1974 his work could be seen at the Internationale Kunstausstellung Berlin, Munich and Paris.
In 1975 he had his 6th and 7th exhibition in Europe, (again) in Paris and Amsterdam.
In 1976 he exhibited his work in Jakarta (Hotel Indonesia) and again in Amsterdam

 

Preference

The master had a preference for decorative motifs from the classic legends of Java.
Typical are his Wayang-motifs.
 

Children

11 of his children (and some of his students) have continued his work. They have their own styles; from modern to leave motifs.
